Outdoor gardens in bloom
July 1st, 2010It’s been awhile since I visited the Des Moines Botanical Center, and in fact I don’t think I’ve ever really toured the outdoor gardens. So, while waiting for a lunch date today, I took a look around. Much of the area that used to be lawn has been nicely landscaped, with hundreds of specimen plants showing the wide variety that can be grown in Iowa gardens. I uploaded all the photos to an album on Webshots, but shown below are my favorites from the day.
This corner of the Japanese Garden feels very “enclosed” and quiet. Nearby fountains offer the soothing sound of water.

The hosta garden has several varieties – what the photo doesn’t show is the relative size of these plants. The dark green one in the back is about six feet across and three feet high, and that’s not counting the bloom stalks.

This pond stretches out from the front entrance of the Botanical Center. A bench at the foot of it is perfect for enjoying a sack lunch while watching visitors come and go.
